Urgent Care Q & A

What is Dental Urgent Care?

Dental urgent care is provided at PreZen Dental to address any issues which require immediate or prompt attention from the dentist. This applies especially to those things which cause pain. Dental emergencies include:

  • Toothaches
  • Sports injuries
  • Infections or abscesses
  • Tender or swollen gums
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
  • A knocked out or a very loose tooth
  • Deep cuts in lips, gums, or other soft tissues
  • Canker sores which do not heal as quickly as they should
  • Broken or lost veneers, crowns, onlays, bridges, dentures, or dental implants

If your tooth is knocked out or broken, get to the dentist right away. Some problems can wait a day or two however it is best to at least contact the practice so you can find out what the dentist recommends that you do.

What should I do if my tooth is knocked out?

In certain situation, a tooth which has been knocked out can be secured back in its socket. To ensure this, you must get to the dentist as quickly as possible. If a tooth has been knocked out, try to put it back in its socket. Do not touch the root during this process. If you can’t place the tooth in the socket, try to put it between your cheek and gums. If all else fails, put the tooth in a container of milk. In most cases, if a tooth falls out because of decay it cannot be replaced. However, if it was the result of trauma, then it can be possible to save it. For lost dental crowns or fillings, fill the gap with a piece of sugarless gum and come into the practice as soon as you can.

How can I avoid a dental emergency?

When you are playing sports or involved in an activity where your mouth could be hit, it is crucial to wear a protective mouthguard. Do not use your teeth to pry off lids or chew on ice or hard candies. This can damage teeth, leading to chips or cracks. Brushing and flossing each day can also help to keep teeth healthy and strong. Healthy teeth are much less likely to become damaged.
